“I love our depth, in our starting rotation and in the bullpen. On offense, we have more or less the same lineup. Eddie is gone, yeah, but his replacement, Kendrys Morales, is a switch hitter who can be a nightmare for opposing managers. He’s a puzzle for pitchers.”
“Cauchemars” is the French word for nightmares but it’s got a roundabout etymology. The “mars” part has the same root as “mare” in “nightmare”- mar/mare both mean ghost/incubus. “Cauche” has got the same root as the verb “cacher” which means “to hide.” So, “hidden ghosts.” Spooky.
“This year, I’m starting with a new freshness without really thinking about what happened last season. Focusing on the wrong things wouldn’t help me improve. I’m trying to think more about things that worked well. I remember stretches that went really well and I hope it’ll help me start well this season.”
“M’acharner” translates directly to stumbling- so he’s “stumbling on the wrong things” but that doesn’t really translate. “Focusing” isn’t perfect, but that’s what you’re getting.
“I have to take better care of myself so I’m healthier and feel better at the end of the season, it’s that simple. I often compare the season to a marathon. I could sprint at start, but I wouldn’t have any juice at the end. The decisions I make behind the plate are more difficult and my confidence isn’t as strong.”
“I have to take better care of myself…” does that mean you are actually going to eat something and drink water before you go into the sauna a day after playing a series in the desert so you don’t pass out and bash your knee in the shower at the gym, Russell? Numpty.
“Le marble” is the plate, I think. I can’t think what else he means there.
On the man of the hour, Tim Raines:
“He’s a guy who played with a lot of heart. He wasn’t one of my idols, but I appreciated very much how he played day after day. He wasn’t afraid to get his uniform dirty. He played with a lot of passion and it’s something I really appreciated about him.”
Notice how Martin doesn’t blow smoke up Raines’s ass by saying “Oh yeah, he was my favourite.” Best.
“I don’t think anything scared him, especially not stealing bases. He was so fast. His speed was a huge part of his game. He stole second, he stole third and I don’t know if he ever stole home, but it wouldn’t surprise me. He was spectacular.”
So, yeah, Martin means the plate when he says “le marble.” Which means the same in English, marble. Probably so-called because it’s white.
“Speed, it’s not really something our team has, but it’s fun to watch in the stands. As a fan, it’s something I appreciated about him.”
As a fan, he might appreciate running on the bases. As a player, not so much.
Probably not:
