Clyde Stubblefied, who died this week at 73, was famous for two reasons. The first was that he was one of two drummers in James Brown's band (James Brown was so funky he had two drummers in one band.)

Here is an interview Stubblefield did with Jaso Starks, the other drummer, for NPR a few years ago.

The second thing Stubblefield was famous for was the drum break in Brown's Funky Drummer. That drum break (5:34) has been sampled over a thousand times and is the corner stone for some of the most famous hip hop and pop songs in the last 47 years.

Including:

And this

It's been used in pop music. It was in George Michael's Freedom '90, as well as this track by Emeli Sandé:

RIP Funky Drummer

While looking for what songs sampled Funky Drummer, I was reminded of this old Mos Def track, which was the B-side of Def's Ms. Fat Booty. Despite it's ridiculous beat by DJ Premier, it doesn't feature a drum beat from Funky Drummer but lifts Brown's countdown.

Thundercat is so good. And this song just amuses me:

My favourite part:

Because I'd rather play Mortal Kombat anyway, hey
I want a love like Johnny Cage
If you're not bringing bottles I suggest you start to walk away
Bitch don't kill my vibe
I can tell you've kinda got uncomfortable
So let me break it down for you
Don't call me, don't text me, after 2am
Unless you plan on giving me some
Cause I got enough friends

He's got a new album out February 24th.

A banger in time for the NBA All Star Game.

Flume put out a new EP this week. It features four new tracks, including this spooky and moody song featuring Pusha T.

I included it mostly because I love and miss The Clipse, therefore I love Pusha T. And I wanted an excuse to share this:

A stylish man is a wonderful thing. Pusha, as the sales guy points out, does do a thing with his eyebrow when he's into something.

I first heard Flume with his fellow Australian Chet Faker. (Looking up this song, I discovered that Chet Faker went back to his real name Nick Murphy. He kept the massive beard, though.) Flume and Chet Faker made some great music a few years ago.

Future dropped a self-titled album this week. (To bring it back to baseball, Josh Donaldson used Future for his walk up song when he didn't have In the Air Tonight anymore. This was a news story in the Toronto Star about a year ago. )

Future sampled Arcade Fire on this track.

Another moody track, with the Prison Song sample:

More Jidenna.

He's been doing a lot of press for his new album. Here he is on Hot 97.

My BFF from high school also has a white mom and a Nigerian dad, so maybe, in addition to the music, I'm drawn to him for that. That, and he's fine AF.

This is Flores. She's American but lives in Norway. Norway is cold but this song is hot.

HAHAHA No, Stro, that's not Barracuda.
